ASBESTOS

Asbestos is the name used for a group of natural minerals that are made up of many small fibres.

Asbestos containing materials (ACM) became popular for their fire, heat, chemical and noise resistant properties and were commonly used in construction from the 1940's through until the 1990's. From 1 October 2016 imports of products containing asbestos were banned. Most homes renovated between 1940's to 1990's will contain some asbestos containing materials.

Common asbestos containing materials include:

  • Asbestos cement products (pipes, flues, roofs etc)
  • Wall cladding (fibrolite)
  • Lagging (on pipes and boilers etc)
  • Water tanks
  • Asbestos insulating board
  • Sprayed coatings on ceilings, walls and beams / columns
  • Textured decorative coatings, flat and stippled plaster
  • Vinyl flooring and backing
  • Textiles and composites
  • Gaskets and ropes (such as on wood burners)
  • Lathe and plaster
  • Mastics and sealants
  • Damp proof courses (malthoid)

There are two classifications of asbestos-class A (friable) and class B (non-friable). The friability of a product denotes its softness levels. Friable asbestos refers to asbestos containing materials that can be crushed, pulverised, crumbled or reduced to a powder by hand.

The highest risk of exposure to asbestos is through renovation. Many asbestos containing materials cannot be identified by eye and require testing.

To avoid putting you and your family at risk you should consult with an Independent Assessor before undertaking any renovations. Contact PDS and one of our team will help walk you through the process and provide a list of Independent Assessors in your area to get you started.

Demolition

Safely removing structural and non-structural components is the most important detail to any demolition project.

Whether your home or building contains asbestos materials or not, PDS offer soft demolition services including:

  • Selective interior or exterior demolition
  • Total building interior strip-outs
  • Partial or complete structure demolition

Soft demolition involves demolition by hand of flooring, walls, ceilings and structural and non-structural framing, however machinery and equipment are brought in when needed.

Our demolition experts are skilled at interpreting plans, listening to the wishes of our clients and are careful not to damage unaffected parts of the structure.

PDS will also salvage and recycle materials whenever possible to help reduce the impact on the environment. These materials are often shipped off shore to communities where access to building materials is limited and expensive.
